Stomach ulcers can have serious consequences for your health if left untreated. They are quite literally an open sore in the digestive tract, rather like a mouth ulcer, but as they are out of sight, it is difficult to know the damage that is being caused. From a common sense point of view, as the stomach produces hydrochloric acid to digest the food, this same acid will attack the sore and make it worse over time. The result could mean that this wound will eventually deepen to the point where it will allow food to leak out into the bloodstream, causing dangerous and even life threatening consequences.
Your doctor will conduct standard tests such as pulse, blood pressure and urine analysis. He/she may also give you a "Breath Test", which involves breathing into a tube where the gas is analysed for the presence of H Pylori bacteria. This is because this bacteria is believed to be responsible for the majority of stomach ulcers. Having established a positive result, your doctor would probably prescribe a multiple dose of antibiotics to kill the bacteria. In most cases, this will eliminate the problem.
A more direct test involves an endoscopy, which entails a small camera tube inserted into the upper digestive tract to actually see any damage and to help diagnose the problem. It is not as scary as it sounds, because you will be given a mild anaesthetic, and you can go about your normal life within a few hours. The most common types of stomach ulcer are peptic and duodenal, so called according to which part of the digestive system they are found in.
The problem with standard medical treatments is that their function of acid suppression, whilst beneficial in the short term, can lead to other health problems in the long term. There are many ulcer patients whose condition do not go away quickly and even have recurrences, and the effect is that the stomach is unable to digest food effectively with reduced acid supplies. The food intake can therefore stay in the system longer, breaking down and rotting, and causing seemingly unrelated health conditions.
The obvious solution to such a problem is to find other ways to deal with it from a range of natural health resources, some of which are old forgotten cures, and some are standard foods which have been tested and proved to be most effective in the elimination of stomach ulcers. The additional and wonderful benefit is that many of these remedies are cheap and easily obtainable. For example, a fresh apple has compounds that are believed to have a restorative effect on the digestive tract. Raw cabbage also has similar properties.
So much better than the prospect of endless medical bills and prescription charges, I am sure you will agree.
